Daren developed a talent for story-telling at an early age. Before he could even write a full sentence, he used to make picture books and then narrate the stories from memory to his family and friends. He began writing his own short stories at the age of six. While Daren was still in High School his creative writing teacher secretly submitted a short story of his to a college writing contest. At the age of 17 Daren was awarded the “Ananda Award” an Honorable Mention in Prose by the University of Indianapolis. His short story entitled “I Don’t Wanna Be Here” was later published in several literary magazines and is the basis for the character “Woodard Jones, Jr.” from his one-man show “Daren With One R”.
In 2004 he created the fictional character “Miss Grenadine Ross” an International Recording Diva stuck in the 1960’s
and is his most popular character to date. “Miss Ross” is a comedic mixture of Diana Ross, Shirley Bassey and the late Lou Rawls. In 2005 Daren wrote, directed, and starred in a musical workshop of his play "Merry Christmas! Love, Grenadine Ross
& The Cherries" to very positive revues. Fleming's musical spoof was even mentioned by Michael Musto in the Village Voice.
Daren is currently developing a series of his short stories into a novel as well as in the process of applying to graduate schools. |
